Attacking Others in Cyberspace

Quite a catchy title, isn't it? I am looking for feedback on this one. It can be anonymous, and if you do not want it published here just say so and I will not publish it, but PLEASE give me some feedback.

An online community, such as blogs, Facebook, Myspace or twitter can be very powerful tools. They can be a blessing to people who are separated by great distances in allowing them to keep updated on the goings on in each others lives, they can be great for groups that cannot meet in person, they are even great for families to visit through. One thing that an online community should not be is a way for someone to personally attack another person. You may wonder, "How is that possible?". Let me run this by you and let me know what your thoughts are. I know someone who has, on six separate documented occasions, made comments online that are a direct attack on someone else that I know. These comments have been made very cleverly, so that the person making them can sit back with an air of self righteousness and say "It just sounds that way." or "If you really think that is what I am doing, you must have a guilty conscience" or any number of other self promoting ideas like that. It all makes me want to jump in and say ENOUGH, just grow up already, get on with your life and leave it alone!

So what are your thoughts? Am I expecting too much from an online community? Is this a reasonable use of this venue or is it out of line?....

  1. As I tell my son, never text, post, or otherwise comment about something you would not say in person. It easy to hide behind technology, where words become empty and uncaring. It's also thoughtless, cowardly and rude... then again, some people just don't care. period. To that I say, "Bless it and forget it!".

    Have a great day!!!

  2. hey bro,

i think two things drive it... human nature and not really thinking through impacts...

as humans we seem to want to vent and man it's so easy to sit down with that poison pen and create a beautiful attack that is only an attack if *they* are guilty...

in more direct attacks people i think just don't think - many stories are out there of co-workers venting on their blogs (FB, twitter...) without really thinking that it will have an impact... it's just venting...

i saw an article on mashable yesterday or the day before that was a facebook vent about work with some serious lack of thought - given that the boss was a friend... yeah - pretty much fired in the comment...

we all need to think about the words we post - much like the spoken word we might need to eat them the next day... or longer since there's always an extra copy on the net somewhere if we've posted it...

of course, even your post here could be considered to be attacking... maybe i think you are talking about my pride blog post i just posted :0 ... oh the can of worms... :)
